Diablo 4’s current Season of Hell’s Legacy is focused on celebrating the 30th anniversary of the series, which debuted all the way back in 1997. As part of that effort, Blizzard has been reaching back into the past to bring back iconic characters and enemies like Deckard Cain, Baal, Mephisto, and of course the Big D himself.
The recent discovery of Rune word recipes from Diablo 2 had players wondering if maybe Blizzard has any other blasts from the past stashed away in the new season, and as discovered by redditor JT99-FirstBallot, the answer is a very big yes.

Tristram, of course, is the village that serves as the home base of the original Diablo, where players go to buy and sell items, and interact with a range of sadly doomed NPCs like Griswold, Ogden, Pepin, and Wirt. But it’s more than just that: As the hub of what is arguably gaming’s most influential action RPG, Tristram is a seminal piece of digital landscape, burned into the memories of old-time Diablo fans—and its destruction sometime prior to the events of Diablo 2 (sorry, mild spoiler there) was a genuine bummer.

What’s particularly impressive here is how faithful this recreation of Tristram is. The visuals are obviously dramatically improved (although it looks just as I remember it—isn’t the human mind a wonderful thing?) but the layout is spot on, and all the characters are there, doing what they do. What really lands for me, though, is the audio: I’m not a Diablo fan by any stretch these days (I haven’t touched the series since Diablo 2) but that Tristram guitar riff hits like a truck, and Griswold’s voice, well—that’s Griswold’s voice!
But the attention to detail runs even deeper. As YouTuber MacroBioBoi explains, this Tristram can be turned into Uber Tristram, a special zone previously only accessible during the Pandemonium Event from the Diablo 2 expansion Lord of Destruction. Uber Tristram is basically a copy of the destroyed village seen in the first act of Diablo 2, with one big expansion: You have to fight Baal, Mephisto, and Diablo at the same time. The payoff for kicking all that Prime Evil ass is the Hellfire Torch, an extremely powerful charm—and yes, the Hellfire Torch reward is waiting for you in Diablo 4 now, too.

Blizzard is clearly going hard to recapture the magic of Diablo’s glory days for the 30th anniversary, and going deep too. Which naturally leads to the question: What else is in there? It certainly seems like there’s more up the sleeve: The Uber Tristram bosses also drop a new item that players are still trying to figure out what to do with.
Now that Diablo 5 is coming—though not until 2029—there are no more expansions planned for Diablo 4, and seasons will be the focus. Blizzard says we can expect more storytelling though. Namely, it needs to bring about the apocalyptic return of Diablo to set up the events of the sequel, which will take place after Sanctuary has fallen to the forces of evil.
