Doug Cockle believes Dandelion is Geralt’s real soulmate in The Witcher 3, but ‘in a very platonic way’

I don’t like waging into gaming romance wars—things got a bit dicey with Ada and Claire—but it seems that I am yet to learn my lesson because here I am again with the news that Geralt’s one true love isn’t Yennifer or Triss, it’s his trusty and talkative bard, Dandelion. At least Geralt’s gaming voice actor Doug Cockle believes there’s something special between the two.

During a chat with PC Gamer’s Joshua Wolens at Gamescom last week (where he also saw Songs of the Past in action) Geralt’s voice actor Doug Cockle revealed that, yes, he thinks Dandelion may in fact be his character’s better half, but there’s a catch: “I would say yes, but in a very platonic way.

Cockle says he doesn’t want to liken their relationship to the cliche that is “bros over hoes” because “it’s a horrible phrase” but there is a seed of truth to it in how Geralt prioritises Dandelion over some of the other characters in The Witcher 3.

“I think there is a bit of that in Geralt’s and Dandelion’s relationship that you know,” Cockle says. “Whenever Dandelion is in trouble, Geralt drops everything, and he’s off to save him.”

Just look to The Wild Hunt’s first main quest in Act 1, Poet Under Pressure, in which Geralt has to track Dandelion down, kill the Witch Hunter, and free him as he’s tied to a chair in a halflings’ hut.

“Depending on your choices in The Witcher 3, I think [Geralt] does drop Yen or Triss or somebody,” Cockle adds. “Yes, it’s one of his romantic interests. You know, at the drop of a hat, just goes. I gotta go [and save Dandelion].”

The quest that comes to mind here is Count Reuven’s Treasure where Geralt has to ignore the sounds of Triss being tortured to get information on Dandelion’s whereabouts. Although there are other reasons as to why this is the best decision, and Triss can certainly hold her own.

With all of this in mind Dandelion’s voice actor John Schwab is eager to point out that just because Geralt is always around to aid Dandelion “that doesn’t mean that Geralt is like ‘Yay! It’s saving Dandelion time again’.” To which Cockle adds “yeah, it’s ‘awe he’s in trouble again’ you know”. Imagine that said in a somewhat exasperated tone—it shouldn’t be too hard to do so.
