I modded GTA 5’s NPCs to be punishable for their crimes, and also much more polite

Los Santos Customs

I’m modding GTA 5 every day in a quest to either transform it into a PC version of GTA 6 or break it entirely. Come back tomorrow to find out what new horrible thing I’ve done to Rockstar’s baby, or check out what I got up to earlier.

Grand Theft Auto 6 will, I am assured, have the greatest NPCs of all time. They will be perfect human simulacra, indistinguishable from the meaty lifeforms behind the controller.

My goal: to make GTA 5’s barely-living NPCs an approximation of that. So I installed two mods: NPC Check On Player and NPCs Get Wanted Stars. The former makes the citizens of Los Santos more polite—they will get out of their cars and check you are okay if they run you over. The latter makes them punishable when they are impolite—when they commit crimes, they will earn their own wanted stars, and find themselves pursued by cops.

I’ll be honest, I mostly installed the NPC Check mod because I hoped it would compel them to stand still when they got wanted stars from hurting me, but hey, it does what it says on the tin. Get pancaked by a car and the driver will screech to a halt, get out, and walk over to check if you’re okay.

The problem is that you can only say ‘Yes, I’m fine,’ which is not really what I want to say to a guy who has just run me over. Plus, the key to say you are fine is Y, which is also the key to go to sleep in my already-installed Roleplay Alone mod. I am constantly getting hit by cars, then falling asleep in the middle of the road as I try to convince the drivers I am okay, which I guess is good enough for them, as they immediately hop back in their rides and drive off.

NPCs Get Wanted Stars, though, is a bit more dramatic. Admittedly, GTA 5’s non-playable inhabitants aren’t exactly prone to random criminal acts, so you do have to bait them into it.

My advice? Run into them at a full sprint over and over again, until they (unreasonably) get mad enough to throw a punch at you. Ideally, do this in front of a police station, then sit back and smirk as the 5-0 chase down their perp, cuff them, and stand around rather confused about what, exactly, to do next, as if they’ve not been trained for outcomes that don’t involve a bullet-riddled suspect.

The realism is off the charts.
