Too much of a good thing, believe it or not, can be bad, even when that thing is Silent Hill. Especially when faced with the prospect of a new game every year, though franchise producer Motoi Okamoto has tried to reassure us that it’s totally a good thing.

“Our aim is to, hopefully, have an annual release of new games,” Okamoto says in an interview with GamesRadar at Gamescom 2026. “We would like to let players know that we have more experiences coming up, and many types of games that, we believe, will be able to provide positive kinds of surprises for players waiting for this for the series.”

Silent Hill f was perhaps the most pleasant gaming surprise I’ve had in a long time. My expectations weren’t exactly low for the game, but I was still apprehensive to see whether Konami and NeoBards could pull off a Silent Hill game which left behind the foggy American mountain town and did something different. But as you can probably tell from my glowing Silent Hill f review, they managed to pull it off.

They did such a great job, in fact, that it single-handedly made me excited for future games to take the curse of Silent Hill to new locations. So why am I so apprehensive about the idea of a new Silent Hill every year? Well, because I also used to play Call of Duty.

What scares me most about an annual release is the pressure both development studios and devs at Konami may face to keep up. Silent Hill isn’t exactly an easy formula to replicate, yes its atmosphere and vibes are distinctive, but it takes more than a bit of fog to pull it off. The key is having a story which is traumatic, believable, and substantial enough to not only justify the fog descending on the protagonist, but to also keep players interested.

Okamoto does at least understand the need for keeping the series fresh with new ideas, however. “If we stay laser-focused on the same American setting, that would exhaust [narrative] possibilities, and also potentially cause fatigue for the playerbase,” he adds.

While teams need to “work within the types of environments and the types of storytelling that works best for them” they also need to push the boat out, creating new circumstances which justify new games. I never want to finish a new Silent Hill game and think to myself: ‘I should’ve just replayed Silent Hill 2’. Hopefully, it never comes to that.
