Baldur’s Gate 3 is—my god—three years old at this point, but it continues to do numbers. I don’t mean player numbers, though god knows it keeps doing those too, I mean that it keeps generating stats. How many deaths, how many murders, how many deployments of a weapon named “Poo-Scraper” in combat—that kind of thing.

Now, Larian is showing those stats off, in what seems to have become an annual tradition. In a post on Bluesky, the studio highlighted some of the dafter numbers that player behaviour in BG3 has produced.

First up, some normal ones: 500 million mod downloads and 13,000 mods uploaded. The story NPC that died most often across people’s games was, by a country mile, the Tiefling leader Zevlor, who bit the dust 12.3 million times. Second place was the wizard apprentice Rolan, who died 8.6 million times.

You get the idea. Then the bizarre stuff comes. The Nut-Buster—literally just a rock—has been deployed twice in combat in the game’s Creche area. Poo-Scraper, its accompanying blade, and property of the quasit Shovel, has been used four times in combat across Act 3.

It’s that time of year again, you naughty number-loving nerds.

Over 30,000 players have taken on the Netherbrain drunk, under 1% have managed to obtain 180,000 gold in a single playthrough and, most disturbing of all, just over 9,000 players experienced the game at a 9:16 aspect ratio. That is to say, they were playing with their monitor turned portrait.

But the worst stat, if you ask me, is this one: “More non-Dark Urge players have managed to murder Alfira than Dark Urge players.” For reference, Alfira is the lovely, blameless bard you encounter in BG3’s grove area during Act 1. If you’re playing Durge, the game forces you to kill her during a cutscene (though you can, technically, avoid it with a bit of metagame shenaniganry). When I played Durge, it honestly upset me a bit. Alfira really is a nice person, toe to tip.

But more people have simply elected to murder her than have been forced into it by the game’s narrative. I’d guess that’s down to people doing (non-Durge) evil playthroughs, but still—congratulations, players, you are all monsters.
