Microsoft is making another 305 layoffs in Redmond, according to a filing Monday with the Washington state Employment Security Department, bringing the company’s total reported layoffs in the state to nearly 2,300 in recent weeks.
The new cuts come just over a month after Microsoft announced a workforce reduction affecting nearly 3% of its global workforce, or approximately 6,000 employees. Those cuts included 1,985 employees in Washington state.
It’s not yet clear whether the newly disclosed 305 layoffs are part of that earlier reduction or represent an additional wave of cuts. We’ve contacted Microsoft for clarification.
In a prior statement, a Microsoft spokesperson said the reductions were intended to “best position the company for success in a dynamic marketplace.”
Microsoft has not said whether efficiencies from artificial intelligence played a direct role in the decision.
