My biggest financial blunder occurred at the ripe old age of six. It wasn’t failing to buy up property in 2008, nor was it failing to swipe a popular domain name, although those probably would have come in handy. No, the mistake that haunts my nightmares was six year old Elie bringing an immaculate Umbreon Undaunted holo to the playground, despite my dad telling me not to because it was pretty and I wanted to show my friends. It’s been downhill since then.

Bear in mind this is just a $20,000 card which has since been chewed up and spat out. But in the high stakes world of TCG it barely compares, especially not against Magic: The Gathering’s exclusive The One Ring card—part of a Lord of the Rings crossover expansion—which is valued at an eye-watering $2 million.

Watch On

So you can imagine my horror when I saw its owner, Post Malone, bring it out during a MTG Commander session and then proceed to tear into its casing. “I’m taking it out of the obnoxious big block, it would ruin Game Knights,” Posty says while popping the lid during Game Knights on The Command Zone.

While watching him do so nearly gave me an aneurism, it was funny to see a room full of MTG players collectively freak out and suddenly scan the table and room for anything that could pose a threat to this tiny gold mine. “Wait are you taking it out of the thing? Where are the drinks?”, co-host Josh Lee Kwai says while also trying to remind the group that a drink was spilled here mere moments ago.

The card wasn’t completely vulnerable, though. As it was still in its smaller slab, Posty is quick to remind people, but that doesn’t stop the stress. “It should be in a museum or in a vault,” co-host, Rachel Weeks says with both hands in the air.

Should a piece of cardboard be worth $2 million? No, even if it is a one of a kind card. But worth is abstract and the fact of the matter is that it does hold that value, so I think the collective heart attack is completely valid, especially considering that this is something not for us mere mortals. “I’m very concerned about if anything happens to the one of One Ring,” Josh Lee Kwai points out. “Our insurance doesn’t cover that card.” Again, valid freak out in my humble opinion.
