Deciding whether to force feed Coen’s mum in Blood of Dawnwalker is one of the initial choices you’ll encounter, but if you’re like me, you may pause over it a while wondering how much it’s going to impact. The game’s prologue has only just started in earnest, and this is the first proper decision you encounter after all. So, here’s what happens based on either choice and which I recommend picking.

While Esme indeed does need to eat—how else is she going to make lots of lovely blood for mass in the evening—force feeding her doesn’t help the situation. If you choose the “Alright. Let’s try” option, Coen will pick up the spoon and try to force feed Esme, but this results in her smacking the spoon aside and then essentially bursting into tears, leaving your dad, Pieter, feeling very sorry about what he tried to do.

Choosing the “I won’t feed her against her will” option instead sees your father try to force feed her, but she also still bats the spoon out of his hand. It’s the same result, but this way she at least seems less distressed with the outcome. This decision has no long term impact—it’s more just a chance to dip your toes in the game’s choice mechanics before some proper decisions later.

So yes, not trying to force feed her is the way to go if you don’t want to feel bad. Either way, your father will ask you to head to Anca’s to get some herbs so your mother can make it through the evening’s blood mass.
