Even though we still haven’t seen a gameplay trailer, Grand Theft Auto 6’s pre-release sales have been “unprecedented,” according to publisher Take-Two. So why doesn’t the public company just tell us specifically how many GTA 6 preorders it’s sold?

Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier recently posed that question to Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick, who said that the volume of GTA 6 preorders is so unprecedented that they “can’t tell whether they mean anything.”

Specifically, Take-Two is unsure whether the preorder count can be used to accurately estimate GTA 6’s total launch sales based on established wisdom, or if it’s such an outlier that established wisdom doesn’t apply, and people who’d normally wait to buy the game after launch are opting to preorder.

“The massive demand for preorders we’ve seen to date could reflect a pull forward of sales that otherwise would materialize in the fullness of time,” Zelnick said.

Because they “simply don’t know the demand curve because it’s just never happened before,” the CEO says that “the raw numbers could potentially be misleading,” and as such Take-Two is keeping them to itself for now. (Though it is clearly happy to indicate that GTA 6 is already an extraordinary success.)

The next big moment for GTA 6 is a proper gameplay reveal, which will debut exclusively on Netflix on August 27, and then on Rockstar’s public YouTube channel six hours later.

Regarding that controversial deal (I don’t think it’s very respectful to GTA fans myself), Zelnick told Bloomberg only that “there’s reasoning” behind it and we’ll “understand more” once we watch it.

All this talk of GTA 6 preorders is purely academic for the PC-only crowd, as there’s still no PC release date for the game. The console-only launch is frustrating for PC gamers however you slice it, but it’s made extra irritating by today’s inflated console prices: The PlayStation 5 Pro currently goes for $900.
