The portrait of the man with red gloves is glowing again, which can only mean one thing for Deadlock players: Valve is about to drop a major new update very soon.
Real soon, in fact. The last time the portrait in the main hub started glowing was before the Old Gods, New Blood update, which introduced six new heroes, a new mode, and a bunch of other things that elevated the game from Valve’s pet project to a real videogame that might actually see the light of day.
One of the developers at Valve confirmed it on Discord, too, but when we’re talking about the community of players who desperately track pizza orders for signs of new updates, they’ll take any extra confirmation they can get.

“Heads up we are planning on releasing the major content update early next week,” the mysterious developer-ran Discord account Yoshi wrote after weeks of speculation from the community.
In typical Valve fashion, however, it hasn’t said a word about what will actually be in the new update, just that it will be big. Deadlock recently overhauled its ranked mode and kicked off its first ranked season. Since then, it’s just been small balance updates.
Valve hitting the glowing eyes button sure makes it seem like there could be a new batch of heroes and revisions to the dwindling number of obviously-unfinished bits in the game. Dataminers have dug up new models for Deadlock’s version of MOBA towers, which could be part of a broader visual update for the few things that still don’t quite fit with its 1950s urban fantasy aesthetic. There’s a rumored PvE-focused mode coming, too, but that sounds like it’s a ways off if it happens at all.
You never really know what Valve has planned. For all we know, the game could have its invite-only restriction lifted and go fully into an open beta. We’re probably not quite there at this point, but it’s clear that a lot of work is going into polishing it into something worthy of a proper Valve game.
