After years of speculation, after reams of fan theories and screenshot analysis, we’ll be finally getting a full look at Grand Theft Auto 6 on… hold on, Netflix? Really? Right, okay, sure.

This news comes courtesy of the site itself, which has a preview page that reads: “Coming August 27: See an extended look at Grand Theft Auto 6, the next evolution in the groundbreaking Grand Theft Auto series.” It’s given the tags of “crime films” and “action adventure films”. Which is technically true for a documentary about Grand Theft Auto 6, I guess—but very much not true of the game itself. Because it’s a videogame, and not a film.

The first look will nonetheless be debuting, as mentioned above, on August 27 at 9 pm EST / August 28 at 2 am BST. It’ll also be coming to YouTube, but six hours later, meaning Netflix has swung a six-hour exclusivity deal with Rockstar for the purposes of, I assume, getting people to pay for Netflix subscriptions.

And hey, from a business perspective? Bully for Netflix, good for them! This is sure to get at least a little pocket change in the coffers of a subscription service that’s grown a little less popular thanks to all the advertisements and, er, AI advertisements.

These kinds of deals will almost certainly work slightly better than Netflix’s other attempts to get a slice of the videogame pie, given it took one of its games down after just half a year and closed its AAA development studio in 2024 in order to make AI games with a new head of operations, who, er, exited around four months later.

Basically, offering exclusive streaming options to key-jangle people into paying for a month of Netflix subscription seems like an altogether more sensible proposition than an Amazon-esque hubris, believing you can do videogames just because you do movies and TV good and have a lot of money to throw around.

And, hey—if you’re excited about GTA 6, you’ll finally get to see it! Yipee! You just might have to take a six-hour nap unless you’ve got a few bucks in your pocket, or if you happen to already have an active subscription going.
