over the hill – Release Date Announcement – YouTube

Among the heavy hitters and viral sensations that make up Steam’s most-wishlisted games, Over the Hill exudes “little engine that could” energy. It’s a chill, vibey offroad driving game that puts you in an old school 4×4 and sets you off among some low-poly hills to get lost. You’ve got a grappling hook and the option to drive in a co-op pack with a few friends, which may be the key ingredient that’s seen Over the Hill build up such a strong pre-release following.

It’s accrued more than a million wishlists in the couple years since it was announced, and all those folks are about to be very happy. Over the Hill is out in just a couple months, developer Funselektor announced today.

October 14th, to be exact, is when the co-op driving game is venturing out on Steam. Console releases won’t arrive until next year.

PC Gamer’s Andy Chalk played a bit of the game earlier this year and came away very pleased with how it captured “the broader experience of being ‘out there,’ going slow, taking your time, and thinking about how you’re going to get where you want rather than just hammering on it. You can hammer on it if you want, and it’ll carry you for a while, and also likely put you over onto your roof when you’re not expecting it.”

Where racing games offer the thrill of speed, Over the Hill “lands closer to real love of the wheel: Funselektor understands it in a way that an awful lot of studios miss,” Andy wrote.

You’ll be able to see what so entranced him soon. Funselektor says the launch will include “several areas in the Canada and Alergia regions” with “more content and surprises than what we had in the demo. If you want to play it sooner, you’ll have to get yourself over to Gamescom later this month.
