Back when the Lords of the End Times expansion was revealed, Creative Assembly also announced that anyone who buys a single lord in the new DLC (costing $9 on their individual store pages) when it releases on September 24 will unlock Immortal Empires, Total War: Warhammer’s trilogy-spanning grand campaign which comprises all content from the past 10 years of development.
But what does buying one of these lords actually get you?
No matter who you buy out of Boris, Thanquol, Nagash, or The Glottkin, you’ll get the free faction of Bretonnia, their core unit roster, and their four legendary lords:
- Louen Leoncouer: The king of Bretonnia who starts close to the Empire.
- Alberic De Bordeleaux: A duke who starts in a colony on the western continent of Lustria.
- The Fay Enchantress: A spellcaster who starts in southern Bretonnia.
- Repanse De Lyonesse: A questing knight who starts in the southern desert of Araby.
They’re all fun campaigns with varied start positions, so you’ll be fighting lots of different factions.

So, who’s the best value?
Nagash is the best buy in sheer content terms if you’re purchasing him for Immortal Empires. He gets units and legendary lords from across the undead roster, and you get Neferata, the new free lord, just in time for the Vampire Counts race rework.
In terms of all the other free content that’s been released over the years for Immortal Empires, you’ll only get the Free-LC associated with the race you purchase.
The good news, though, is that works with other DLC, too. If you bought Aislinn as an individual lord from Tides of Torment, for example, (also $9) you’d get Imrik and Alith Anar as Free-LC legendary lords for the High Elves. This is worth remembering if you want to unlock lots of content and campaigns for the cheapest price, though make sure to keep an eye out as the DLC (and base games) regularly go on sale.
If you buy Boris, you’ll get all of his Middenheim faction units, Emil Valgir as a hero, the core Empire unit roster, but you’ll also unlock access to the Empire’s Free-LC, which includes:
- Gotrek and Felix: Two legendary heroes you can recruit via a quest battle.
- Ulrika Magdova: A legendary vampire hero you can unlock during the campaign.
- Jade Wizard, Grey Wizard, and Gold Wizard: Wizards for the lore of life, shadow, and metal who you can recruit.
Since the Empire never got a Free-LC legendary lord, besides Bretonnia, Boris is the only campaign you’ll get to play. Still, the Empire is very fun and you can, of course, confederate Karl Franz and Elspeth Von Draken nearby, plus Volkmar the Grim in the southlands, Balthasar Gelt in Cathay to the east, and Markus Wulfhart in Lustria to the west, provided they all survive long enough for you to encounter them.
Thanquol
If you buy Thanquol, you’ll get access to his units, Skreech Verminking as a hero, the core Skaven unit roster, but also their Free-LC:
- Tretch Craventail: A cowardly legendary lord who starts in the Darklands to the east of the World’s Edge Mountains.
- Skaven Chieftain: An anti-large hero you can recruit.
Skaven, in general, are super fun to play. There’s also nothing stopping you confederating Ikit Claw in Skavenblight to the west, Queek Headtaker in the Badlands to the south, Throt the Unclean in Kislev to the north, Lord Skrolk in Lustra to the far west, and Deathmaster Snikch in Cathay to the far east, again, as long as they survive until you reach them.
Nagash
Definitely the most bang for your buck if you enjoy undead. As the Lord of Undeath, Nagash gets units from all across the undead race’s unit rosters, such as Tomb Kings, Vampire Coast, and the Vampire Counts. He can also confederate a number of undead legendary lords and heroes from other factions as his Mortarchs.
In terms of Free-LC, he also gets:
- Neferata: A new Free-LC legendary lord arriving with Lords of the End Times, Neferata also benefits from the Vampire Counts race rework that’s dropping alongside the expansion.
- Ulrika Magdova: Since she’s a vampire, you can recruit this legendary hero as part of Neferata’s campaign.
The Glottkin
If you buy The Glottkin, you get their units, four legendary heroes, and the core Nurgle-focused, Warriors of Chaos roster, but also some Free-LC:
- Harald Hammerstorm: A vampire-hating legendary hero for the Warriors of Chaos.
- Karanak: A giant three-headed hound of Khorne legendary hero.
Honestly, I wouldn’t recommend the Warriors of Chaos as a starting faction in Total War: Warhammer. They don’t have a particularly traditional playstyle, especially with all The Glottkin’s plague-focused stuff. Since they can’t confederate other Warriors of Chaos factions either, you won’t even have a chance to yoink other legendary lords and try them.
