Toby Longworth is a titan (no, not that kind) of Warhammer 40k voicework—one of the most prolific narrators of Black Library novels there is. For years, he’s narrated Dan Abnett’s work, widely agreed to be the best 40k has to offer, including the hugely popular Eisenhorn and Gaunt’s Ghosts series.

He’s also narrated a variety of Horus Heresy novels, where he gave voice to the famous Death Guard turned Grey Knight, Nathaniel Garro. Now, he’s lending his voice to Dawn of War 4, specifically to a bunch of different Space Marines, and so he sat down to paint and talk with us about his career.

As someone who’s listened to Toby Longworth’s voice for hundreds of hours (is there a way to say that without sounding creepy?) I had to know: Who’s his favorite character to play? .

“Garro was always my favorite character, but that was very early on and Garro has a bit of a following,” explains Longworth. “His voice has a wonderful rolling quality that allows you to do it really smoothly. Eisenhorn was great fun as well. I did Gaunt’s Ghosts, too, and Gaunt has a very long story arc. I don’t know how many books it is—I’m sure someone does—but it’s a lot.”

“Being able to stick with a person that long, that’s the most fun. So I’d say of all of them, I think I’m going to go for Gaunt, just because I think Gaunt’s had the most amount of opportunities for me to get it right.”

If you’re curious about Warhammer 40k and looking for some novels to read, Gaunt’s Ghosts is a really good starting point. They’re basically the equivalent of the Sharpe novels by Bernard Cornwell, except set in 40k, about an Imperial Guard Commissar who takes command of the first and only regiment from the planet Tanith. My personal favorite is Necropolis.

There are 15 of them, which as Longworth said is a lot, but as someone who’s read them all (and all of the Sharpe books), I definitely recommend giving them a look if you’re curious about Black Library. They’re so good, in fact, I kind of hope the first Warhammer 40k TV show that Henry Cavill is working on turns out to be that instead of Eisenhorn, but chances are slim.
