We were introduced to the turbulent flow of time in Remake, and we met Sephiroth for his iconic encounter in Rebirth, and now it’s time to wrap this story up. Final Fantasy 7 Revelation is the third and final act in Square Enix’s remake trilogy, and even from its earliest teases, it looks like this one is squeezing in all the nostalgia-mandated highlights. After its Summer Game Fest reveal, Square hasn’t been shy about interviews and lore dumps, so I’ll keep the updates coming, but here’s everything we know so far about Final Fantasy 7 Revelation.

Final Fantasy was my introduction into RPGs, and probably why I’m here writing about games today. I’m impressed by how much Square Enix was ready to show with Final Fantasy 7 Revelation’s reveal, and eager to see if they stick the landing. Will Revelation play it safe and stick to the FF7 story we know? Or will something else come of its splintered timeline?

Is there a Final Fantasy 7 Revelation release date?

Final Fantasy 7 Revelation will launch in spring 2027 but Square Enix has not confirmed a specific date yet. Revelation is also the first game in the trilogy to launch on all platforms simultaneously, including PC.

There are no PC store pages yet, but Revelation will be available on Steam, Epic Games Store, and Xbox for PC. So no store exclusivity deals this time around, either.

What’s notable about Revelation’s combat?

As the current mainline series drifts further from turn-based combat, it’s nice to see Final Fantasy 7 double down on its commitment to honoring the series roots. While not entirely turn-based, the tactical hybrid battle system is back, which at least gives me the option to pause the chaos and consider my options.

A few other details I’ve noticed from trailers and interviews:

You may like

  • FITs, a new dress-up system, changes movesets à la classic Final Fantasy
  • The gunslinging Vincent Valentine is playable, and can transform into giant beasts
  • Cid is also playable, with his classic, aerial Dragoon kit
  • Synergy abilities are also back
  • Knights of the Round will return, as confirmed by Denfaminico Gamer
  • Square Enix describes Weapons as “enemies that Cloud and his companions must stand against,” so it sounds like they’re no longer optional

And what about the rest of the gameplay?

  • There’s an open world you’ll navigate with the Highwind, Cid’s prized airship
  • You’ll depart from the Highwind via parachute. (I hope someone cracks a “where we droppin’?” at least once)
  • Square Enix confirmed in an interview with Polygon that the Queen’s Blood card game will return, and it’s working on snowboarding
  • The Tifa vs Scarlet slap fight is also a mini-game, according to Denfaminico Gamer
  • There’s new Chocobo content, but no details on what that includes
  • Rebirth’s affinity system has been reworked to explore relationships between other party members, not just each character’s relationship with Cloud

The Remake trilogy is the same story, but different

I’m speculating, but from what we’ve seen in Remake and Rebirth, it seems like Revelation will conclude the trilogy with a story that follows the same big beats as the original. The difference is in the little choices we make in-between, and the glimpses at alternate timelines Sephiroth loves torturing Cloud and the gang with.

When everything is all said and done, I don’t expect to see any major differences from the original story when it comes to who lives and dies or the fate of the planet.

Keep up to date with the most important stories and the best deals, as picked by the PC Gamer team.

Where does FF7 Revelation pick up from?

While Hamaguchi has played coy when answering the question, it sounds like Revelation will begin right around where Rebirth left off—no time skips or ignoring parts of the original PS1 game. In an interview with Bloomberg, Hamaguchi noted that Rebirth ends in the Forgotten City, and that the original RPG moves on to the Icicle Inn from there.

As for the state of the rest of the world, we know Meteor has been summoned, so it’s not lookin’ too good out there. The planet is (understandably) pissed about all the chaos, so the Weapons are awake and responding to anything they deem a threat.

Where can we go in Revelation’s version of the planet?

It sounds like piloting the Highwind gives us access to the entire planet, though I’m assuming story beats will prevent us from entering some areas in Revelation. So expect to see places like Midgar and Gongaga return, along with some new locations like:

  • Wutai, home to the ninja village and Yuffie
  • Mideel, the hot spring town
  • Rocket Town, the place built around Shinra’s once-abandoned rocket
  • The Underwater world, or at least that’s what’s hinted at in the Bloomberg interview

Will Final Fantasy 7 Revelation have multiple endings?

No, Final Fantasy 7 Revelation will not have multiple endings. In an interview with GamesRadar, Hamaguchi confirmed players will have choices to make that impact the story, but the trilogy will conclude with a “singular ending.” While our paths to the big finale may look different, they’ll all end the same.
