We might be years removed from the old “clicking on a placard for hours until an invisible timer decides to run out” method of Final Fantasy 14 housing yore, but that doesn’t mean securing your own abode in the critically-acclaimed MMORPG is a total walk in the park these days.

The good news is that buying a house in Final Fantasy 14 is a relatively hands-off experience these days as it’s all done in a lottery-based system. The bad news is that the demand continues to far outweigh the supply, so you may need to try more than once.

I’ll lay the whole process out below with a Final Fantasy 14 housing schedule tracking both the entry and results periods, along with how to bid and check if you’ve won your very own plot of land.

If you want to bid for a house in Final Fantasy 14, first make sure that the lottery cycle is currently in the entry period, which you can see above.

To find out which plots are free, PaissaDB is a great website that pulls crowdsourced info to find empty housing lots. You can filter by your server, housing district, and house size. PaissaDB will also tell you whether Free Companies or individuals can bid on the house, how many entrants there are, and how much it costs.

You can only enter the lottery for one house per cycle, so choose wisely.

Make sure you have enough gil on you, as you’ll have to pay upfront in order to bid. From there, head over to the main aetheryte for your desired housing district: Gridania, Limsa Lominsa, Kugane, Ul’dah, Kugane, or Foundation.

Find the correct ward and plot, click on the placard, designate whether you’re purchasing for yourself or for your Free Company, and enter your gil to bid. And that’s it! You’ll be given a number, and now it’s time to wait for the results period.

Once the results period has commenced, it’s time to find out whether your number is the lucky one. Simply head back to the plot you bid on (if you’ve forgotten, you can check by going to Duty > Timers > Estate and then clicking on Housing Lottery Status) and once again click on the placard.

It’ll tell you the winning number. If it’s yours, congratulations! You’ll be directed to finalise the purchase and claim the lot as your own. You must do this within the four-day results period or you’ll lose the plot and 50% of the gil you spent to enter the lottery.

If your number isn’t chosen, the game will refund the gil you spent on entering the lottery, so don’t worry about losing out. You have 90 days to claim back your gil, so make sure you don’t forget to return to the placard. Even if you’re already being taunted by someone’s house standing proud on the plot you wanted.
