The Fabricator is your lifeline in Subnautica 2, allowing you to craft all kinds of helpful equipment and supplies. However, you’ll quickly reach a point where you’re unable to make certain items because it requires a ‘fully functional Fabricator‘.

It’s much less confusing than it makes it out to sound, but this Fabricator upgrade will be a roadblock if you don’t figure it out. So here’s what you need to do.

To get a fully functional Fabricator, all you have to do is unlock basebuilding, construct a base, and build a Fabricator inside it. For some reason, the game doesn’t explain that the Fabricator pre-installed in your Lifepod, which you’ll have been relying on so far, is just a basic one, despite it looking identical to any you build yourself.

So grab the Habitat Builder and make a basic, sealed base anywhere you like if you haven’t already—I’d recommend one of the best base locations. Then, go to the ‘interior facilities’ section and you’ll see the Fabricator in the production category at the top, which you can place on a wall.

To build your own upgraded Fabricator, you’ll need the following materials, which are all easy enough to collect from the caves around the Lifepod:

This now-upgraded Fabricator works exactly like the basic one in your Lifepod, only that you can now access all the restricted blueprints, like the Sonic Resonator, Repair Tool, High Capacity Air Tank, and the Wakemaker. With that in mind, there’s no point returning to your Lifepod now unless you run out of power during the night and need to quickly craft something simple, or until you craft a NOA in your base.
