The Hyacinth Macaw is the most annoying legendary bird to tame in Crimson Desert. Sure, it’s just a blue parrot, but it somehow manages to be far more difficult than either crafting Platinum to feed the Iron Eagle, or shooting down a Phoenix with an explosive arrow. Why’s it so hard to tame? Well, RNG essentially.

The Hyacinth has such an unpredictable flight path that it’s tough to pin down exactly where it will be. It also favours one particular food, which unfortunately, other birds in the area also love, so they’ll often land on your feeder and pinch some. Still, taming this parrot is more than possible with a little patience, so here’s what to do.

You can find the Hyacinth Macaw near the Giant’s Yard Outpost in the far east of Pywel, west of Red River, but also south of the Red Tree Forest, close to where you find the legendary horse, Rocade.

You’ll need to do a few things to tame this bird:

  • Unlock the Sotdae of Bond: As with many of the other legendary birds, you’ll need to acquire this bird feeder to tame them.
  • Acquire 10x Desert Melons: These are the Hyacinth Macaw’s preferred food and they give you +15 Trust per melon, meaning you need the bird to eat seven of them. The three spare are because other birds will almost certainly land on the feeder and try to steal some.
  • Liberate the Giant’s Yard Outpost: This camp is occupied by the Wolf Trackers and while it’s not strictly necessary to clear it to catch the bird, it’ll make things a lot easier since you’ll be planting the feeder nearby.

You can buy five Desert Melons from the Grocer in Tommaso, close to the stable, and another seven from the Grocer in Varnia. Either that, or buy the first five, rest for 12 hours, then return to buy another five.

Once you have your melons and the outpost is liberated, plant your Sotdae of Bond at the spot marked below, just to the east of the camp itself, on the ledge above the ravine with the Red Tree Forest below you.

Once you find the right spot it’s basically a waiting game since the Hyacinth Macaw’s flight path is tough to predict—simply go a short distance away and watch. It’s easy to spot the flock with the Hyacinth Macaw because it’s composed of one big blue bird (the macaw) and a load of yellow-ish Sun Conures who might try to land on the feeder instead. If one does, Force Palm the feeder to scare it off so it doesn’t eat all your melons.

Once the Hyacinth Macaw has reached 100 Trust you can “Take in” the bird (Image credit: Pearl Abyss)

At first I thought the Hyacinth Macaw wouldn’t appear when it was raining, but then it suddenly landed on my feeder during the daytime in the rain, so it really is just random sadly. I placed the feeder in all sorts of different spots before this one, too. Once it’s eaten enough melon, approach and choose “Take in” to acquire the parrot as a pet.
