End of the Line | Shion Hero Trailer | Overwatch – YouTube

Watch On

Overwatch’s soft reboot earlier this year has kicked off more story development than I can keep up with. There are several new short stories, comics, and even webcomics that are building up to something big. And it looks like they’re going to be necessary for figuring out what is going on with its newest hero, too.

The trailer for Overwatch 52nd hero, Shion, doesn’t actually tell us much about her that we didn’t already vaguely know from some of the hints in the past few months. She’s one of the leaders of the Hashimoto clan—Overwatch’s near-future version of the yakuza—and dual wields pistols.

People have already been debating if she’s a robot (an Omnic in Overwatch parlance) or a human based on the early info, and the trailer refuses to give a clear answer. At first, it looks like Shion wears a demon mask like many of the other Hashimoto members, but when she starts talking through speakers in her neck it almost seems like it’s not a mask at all and that she is indeed a robot.

This isn’t helped by the fact that she tells Sojourn that she “fights well for a human,” which is the kind of thing an Omnic would say. But Sojourn says she was thinking the same thing and now I don’t know what to believe.

Right now, all we know is that she’s the clan’s “most terrifying elder” and that she’s going to be a villain in the next season. Her dialogue with other heroes or a new comic will likely explain her whole deal.

For now, we’ll have to wait until she is playable in season 3 starting on June 16 to find out more. It’s not super clear what kind of hero she’ll be. She has those pistols and an electrified knife of some sort that she stabs Sojourn with. Maybe Blizzard is about to drop a damage hero who can stun you in close-range and then turn you into swiss cheese.
