They say time flies when you’re having fun, and boy did these past 10 years of Overwatch sure zip past. For the last few weeks Team 4 has been celebrating the momentous milestone with nostalgic game modes, cosmetics, loot boxes, and more loot boxes. But now game director Aaron Keller has taken to social media to share his own celebration: Overwatch’s creation story.

“Happy 10 year anniversary Overwatch,” Keller says. “While the game launched 10 years ago, Team 4 started working on it in mid-2013. I’d like to take you all through some of that original journey that the team took to launch the game.”

This first image isn’t from OW! It’s a concept for a game the team was exploring just after the cancellation of Project Titan in 2013. That game never materialized. It was a totally different setting, but as you can see in this image, a few ideas from that game moved into OW. pic.twitter.com/9RjcTIG4MrMay 24, 2026

It won’t come as a surprise to many of you that Overwatch actually originated from a scrapped Project Titan, but Keller shows us just how much was used with concept art that would later become Cole Cassidy; it doesn’t look like they changed a thing. But I suppose that’s to be expected when the team was just given a few weeks to pitch Overwatch.

Keller then goes on to explain how Team 4 “codenamed the new project Prometheus and the development team called ourselves Prometheans,” which is pretty fitting all things considered.

From this point onwards, the team began working on several aspects of what would later become Overwatch: “We quickly got to work, figuring out key issues for the new project like character and environment scale”, alongside the “combat feel” including what being low health would look like in-game.

One feature I’ve always loved about Overwatch is how it can convey masses of information efficiently. This is through small aspects like a tinted screen to relay when you’re low health or being healed, the sound design which can tip you off to what hero is around a corner or what ult is about to be launched into your team, or by the simple fact that its in-game UI holds so much information yet never feels overwhelming.

We worked a lot on combat feel, studying other games and working through problems in engine and through concepts. This was a piece on how low health and getting hit would look like in game… pic.twitter.com/td7aIAWBMvMay 24, 2026

This precision also translates to Overwatch’s character designs, which are still some of the best in the business. But they were so good at the time of pitching back in 2013 that it was actually credited “as the moment where the room transformed from doubtful to excited about what this game could be.” I get it, I was also overwhelmed with excitement the first time I saw Roadhog.

Then there were all the map mockups located around the world, including what would later become the legendary King’s Row and the not-so-legendary Throne of Anubis. Funnily enough, Anubis went on to become the “first real map” after the team “worked in paper for months”, as they waited for the engine to be rebuilt from the scraps of Project Titan.

Overwatch’s creation story is one of resilience, and that’s something Team 4 have continued to draw from over the past 10 years, through all the ups and downs. But here’s hoping for more ups going forward. “I am so grateful for our community, its players, past, present and future,” Keller ends with. “This world means so much to us, and to me personally. I sincerely hope that 10 years from now, we’re celebrating another decade together. From the bottom of my heart, thank you.”
