Ubisoft’s free-to-play Division shooter is coming to Steam

The free-to-play shooter The Division Resurgence has taken another step on its strange journey, as Ubisoft announced today that it’s set to launch on Steam later this year.

The Division Resurgence was announced in 2022, with a release target of 2024, but in typical Ubisoft fashion there were delays, and it didn’t actually go live until March 2026. Just a month later, with pretty much zero warning, it quietly dropped onto PC as well, in early access, to enable “technical testing ahead of its official launch in August.”

It was something of a surprise: As PC Gamer’s Shaun Prescott noted at the time, there was no hint that Ubisoft had any plans for it beyond mobile platforms, and had in fact emphasized its mobile-focused nature: “Our objective in bringing the Division universe to mobile, is to enable more people worldwide to enjoy this open world experience whenever and wherever they want. We feel very lucky that the mobile market has evolved to the point where we can develop such an ambitious game.”

But just as Blizzard opted to bring Diablo Immortal to PC, Ubisoft decided to broaden The Division Resurgence’s base as well. And after a little over a month of being available on Ubisoft’s own storefront, it’s now up for wishlisting on Steam.

“Over the next few weeks we will be hard at work polishing the last elements of the game for a truly seamless experience, whatever your preferred platform may be,” The Division dev team wrote. “The game is fully cross-platform and cross-play, meaning you can continue your journey in The Division at any time.”

The announcement doesn’t get into why Ubisoft decided to make the move to Steam just a month after dropping it on its own storefront, but we can make a pretty good guess: Despite everyone’s best effort, Steam is where it’s at. Just like everyone else, Ubisoft came crawlin’ back in 2024, and whether it wanted to take one last kick at the flying solo can with Resurgence, or just needed a little more time to get its ducks in order, it’s not really surprising that if it wants the game on PC, it wants to do it on Steam.
