007 First Light sequels will be ‘done by MGM and, theoretically, by Amazon Game Studios,’ Amazon exec says

007 First Light is a pretty good James Bond videogame and, by early appearances, a hit, and so it’s no great surprise that more of them are going to happen: So says Amazon Gaming general manager Jeff Gattis in a new interview with Polygon. But will IO Interactive be involved in the process? That, apparently, is uncertain.

Amazon acquired the James Bond movie franchise in 2025, five years after IO Interactive announced that it was making a Bond game. Because of that pre-existing deal, Amazon “didn’t have the full rights to this First Light James Bond game,” Gattis said, and so IOI was able to self-publish. But sequels, he continued, will be “done by MGM and, theoretically, by Amazon Game Studios.”

Bringing future Bond games in-house is part of Amazon’s strategy to capitalize on the properties it owns, and its ability to deliver them across a wide range of media.

“We do see this continued integration of video and movies and videogames, where that line is becoming much more blurry,” Gattis said. “We think that’s a real opportunity for us to create IP that extends—or kind of expands upon—TV shows and movies. So there’ll be a Tomb Raider TV show on Prime Video that’ll go alongside the games. There’s a lot of things we have in the works on new games that’ll relate to Prime Video IP.”

That naturally leads into questions about what kind of Bond games we can look forward to in the future. After years of trying and failing to establish itself as a force in gaming, Amazon famously opted to move away from big-budget development in 2025: Steve Boom, Amazon’s vice president of audio, Twitch, and games, said at the time that Amazon Games leadership had been evaluating its plans over the past several months “through the lens of our mission to deliver the very best gaming experiences to customers while leaning into the things that Amazon does best,” citing as an example the “AI-powered Snoop Dogg game where he’s a judge.”

Amazon hasn’t completely abandoned the space: It is, for example, publishing the upcoming Tomb Raider games Legacy of Atlantis and Catalyst, and it could strike a similar publishing deal with IOI for a new Young Jimbo adventure. But it might also decide that, dollar for dollar, it’s better off with an AI-led mobile game—free for Prime Video subscribers, maybe. That sounds terrible, but given the company’s history with games, I don’t think anything’s off the table at this point.

I’ve reached out to Amazon for more information on its plans for the future of 007 First Light and will update if I receive a reply.
