Halo remake reviews totter as fans lament the 3 horsemen of 2026 game releases: Bugs, pointless logins, and duff servers

The Halo remake has released for those who forked out for the advance access version, and they’re not thrilled with what they’ve got. At time of writing, Halo: Campaign Evolved is sitting at a humdrum 68% Mixed rating in the Steam user review scores—a mere 2% off the score given to the game by our Morgan Park in PCG’s Halo remake review.

Why are fans—who were sufficiently John-117-pilled to pay the advance access premium—underwhelmed? Oh, the classic reasons: bugs, server problems, utterly extraneous account linking requirements. It wouldn’t be a 2026 videogame release without those, would it?

“Login failed. Cannot play the singleplayer game as servers are overloaded,” reads a review from Steam user GoatMedic󠁳Echoo. “Screw your DRM. Combat was not evolved.” That’s pretty much the vibe when it comes to how users feel about signing into their Microsoft account to play. “Error 400 or 500 when trying to login to Microslop’s online services to connect Steam account,” says user LVL13_. “Typical.”

On the plus side, Halo Studios is replying to complaints about login issues to let fans know they’re fixed. “This login issue should now be resolved. If you’re still encountering this issue, please close and restart Halo: Campaign Evolved,” reads the dev comment posted in reply to various different login complaints.

It seems to be more and more common for devs and publishers to wade in and start answering negative reviews these days, which makes me feel a little bad for whoever it is that gets saddled with the responsibility.

Anyway, Halo Studios does not yet have a canned answer for the other complaints players have. Many are encountering technical issues, with one user complaining of “constant crashes, graphical shimmering effect with fast movement [and] inability to disable upscaling”. “Disgusting frametime spikes and stutters,” laments another. They’re far from the only ones. Plenty of the negative reviews touch on performance problems at least once.

All Halo Studios can offer in reply to that is a comment that performance feedback is being passed onto the devs, which probably would not mollify me if I had paid extra money for advance access to a videogame.
